OLX Kenya has set up offline farm input centers to help farmers order for farm inputs online or via SMS and pick them up from the centers in a move the firm says will increase access to inputs and double farm yields of farmers across the country.
Dubbed kilimo smart centers, the pick up points will see farmers place orders for fertilizers, farm equipment and other various farm inputs from OLX and collect them at these centers.
According to Priscilla Muhiu, head of business development OLX, “We rolled out a plan to set up Kilimo smart centers upon realizing the key challenge farmers face is access to good quality farm inputs. Most of the inputs farmers use currently, affect the soil fertility and over a period of time, they realize a decrease in yields. In order to enable these farmers, generate more yields, it is important that right farm inputs are at their disposal.
With partners such as Mavuno Technology, Osho Chemicals and Soil Cares, OLX aims to ensure farmers access quality inputs such as seeds, fertilizer, equipment and soil testing in time. Muhiu says the firm’s first four centers have been rolled out in Nakuru and Nyandarua counties with plans to roll out more centers across other regions in kenya.
OLX in August launched its SMS service to enable most farmers access the service minus internet. Through the SMS service, a farmer is able to now dial 887 and place their orders on OLX. The orders are received and immediately sent to the centers for collection.
